The Ethos Chrome extension is intended to use minimal permissions in order to surface Ethos scores in various webapps.
Since the extension finds and replaces elements on websites, we need the ability to read and change data on various sites. This is the only permission that we currently ask for when installing the chrome app.

Used to pull scores from the Ethos API to display through the extension. | |
We find and replace elements of Twitter components (primarily, profiles and mouseovers) to include credibility scores on Twitter. |
Manually disabling individual sites may have unexpected and unintended consequences. We recommend leaving all site access on.
Ethos also requires the permission to "Read your browsing history," a permission that enables us to make sure we're adding Ethos scores when you change Twitter screens. We can only see browsing history within the sites that we ask permission for.
Without it, we won't be able to appropriately recognize that the user has changed the screen within the Twitter web app and update the profile page to include the Ethos specific components.
We do not store or pull any other browsing history data (and we can't!); for more details you can view our privacy policy here.
